Simone Biles named Sports Illustrated's 2024 sportsperson of year And the possibility of her returning to the Olympics in 2028

The 27-year-old gymnast was interviewed and celebrated for revolutionizing gymnastics and leaving an indelible mark on the broader world of sports. The “most decorated gymnast” in history is defined by more than her impressive medal haul—her advocacy for mental health, her resilience in the face of challenges, and her efforts to inspire and elevate the voices of athletes around the world.

“It’s a big role and shoes to fill. I’m honored because we want to put gymnastics on the map, alongside the Olympic year so it’s really cool,” said Biles.

The announcement was made on Thursday, January  2nd. This accolade adds to her phenomenal career, not long after her amazing performance winning three gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In her own words, Biles shared during an interview with Sports Illustrated, “I’ve learned that being vulnerable is a strength, not a weakness. Taking care of your mind is just as important as training your body.” With all her accomplishments, Biles is the first Olympian to be recognized as Sportsperson of the Year since 2012 when LeBron James led the U.S. men's basketball team to gold at the London Games in the same year he also won the NBA MVP award, Finals, and Finals MVP.

Beyond her athletic prowess, Biles has become a cultural icon. Her return highlighted not just her unparalleled talent but also her resilience and advocacy, championing mental health awareness, athlete safety, and equity.

During her interview with Good Morning America, Biles said, “It’s okay not to be okay. I think I showed a very vulnerable side that most people don’t see because most of the time whenever I'm out there they’re seeing me win gold medals and all this stuff that’s not relatable.” She was still shocked about such an achievement.

“I feel like I’m always shocked at winning any award or being honored,” said Biles.

After earning such a title, is the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics her next goal?

As of now, Biles hasn’t decided if she will be competing. For now, she wants to focus on “taking time off mentally and physically and seeing where life takes her.” Whether or not she competes in 2028, Biles' legacy as a transformative figure in gymnastics and sports at large is firmly established.
