Rap Rivalry Hits The Courtroom: Drake Takes OnKendrick Lamar and UMG Over Explosive DissTrack.
The ongoing feud between two of rap’s biggest names has intensified, shifting from musical disses to legal action. Drake has filed a lawsuit against Kendrick Lamar and their shared record label, Universal Music Group (UMG), accusing them of crossing the line with the
track “Not Like Us.” The suit claims the song's content went beyond artistic expression, allegedly leading to defamatory consequences and raising concerns about the role of record
labels in escalating rap feuds.
Drake’s defamation lawsuit targets UMG over Kendrick Lamar’s controversial diss track, which reportedly accuses Drake of inappropriate behavior and incites harmful actions against him. Lyrics cited from Genius.com include: “Say, Drake, I hear you like ‘em young. You better not ever go to cell block one. To any b**ch that talk to him and they in love, just make sure you hide your lil’ sister from him.”
According to Drake, UMG knowingly approved and promoted the track despite being aware of its false and damaging allegations. The rapper also claims that the song’s release directly led to his Toronto home being targeted in a violent incident, during which a security
guard was injured in a shooting.
UMG has denied the allegations, emphasizing their support for Drake’s career and commitment to artist safety. The lawsuit follows previous accusations by Drake that UMG manipulated streaming platforms to inflate the track’s popularity.
Meanwhile, “Not Like Us” has achieved remarkable commercial success, holding the top position on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart for 21 weeks and earning several Grammy nominations.
In response, UMG has defended the song as a legitimate form of artistic expression, denying any involvement in defamatory actions. As the case unfolds, tensions between Drake and Kendrick Lamar continue to rise, turning their rivalry into a broader legal and industry wide conflict. The outcome remains uncertain, but the story is far from over.
