Lifetime’s Gospel Biopic Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia Starring GRAMMY Winner, Danielle Brooks
Lifetime’s gospel biopic Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia will premiere next Saturday, April 3 at 8:00pm ET/PT. Directed by Tony Award winner, Kenny Leon, it will star GRAMMY Award winner, Danielle Brooks (notoriously known for her role as “Taystee in Orange is the New Black), it will also include Tony nominee Joaquina Kalukango, Jason Dirden (Fences), Olivia Washington (The Butler), and Rob Demery (Lovecraft Country). The film is based on the legendary, Mahalia Jackson; a young African American female born in New Orleans who would grow up to be one of the most revered gospel figures in U.S. history! By tailoring her music to the tune of the Civil Rights Movement and actively singing at rallies (including the March on Washington in 1963 with Dr. Martin Luther King), Jackson created “Move on Up a Little Higher” which would take her to international fame. Ms. Jackson even performed at John F. Kennedy’s inaugural ball!
