Jennifer Lopez Stars in Second Act
Looks like the 2002 Chick Flick, Maid in Manhattan may be getting a spiritual successor this Thanksgiving. Led by Ms. Ventura herself, Jennifer Lopez returns to her RomCom days in Second Act, an upcoming romantic comedy film directed by Peter Segal (Nutty Professor II, The Longest Yard) and written by Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas (Perfect Stranger. Maid In Manhattan) and Justin Zackham (The Bucket List). The film stars Lopez as Maya, a woman stuck in a low-paying retail job who gets a once in a lifetime chance to fulfill her career ambitions when a private finance firm is misled into believing that she is an accomplished consultant and hires her to handle a major business deal. There she sets out to prove that street smarts are just as valuable as a college degree (something all too relatable in this day and age).
The project was developed by STXfilms with Lopez from an idea conceived by writers Goldsmith-Thomas and Zackham.
“It’s about reinvention at a time when everyone is getting marginalized and downsized,” said Goldsmith-Thomas, “It’s about the every man who says that you can do more, you can be more...This is a story that supports the dreamer...It also celebrates street smarts. It’s about a woman who might not have a formal education but has an amazing amount of street smarts and she proves that it can win the day.”
Goldsmith-Thomas also notes that Lopez embodies that spirit, with Lopez adding:
“There are so many things I love about this project and script. People try to put women to sleep at a certain age. Second Act is a story that empowers the every woman to do more, to be more and not limit their dreams. I am thrilled to partner with STX as they continue to create and empower the female audience.”
Lopez is accompanied by a few notable faces, helping to bring this story of reinvention to life. Emmy winner, Leah Remini, stars as Joan, Lopez’s best friend and fellow Big Box employee from Queens and HSM alum, Vanessa Hudgens, stars as Zoe, a young executive at a consumer goods company. Other cast includes Annaleigh Ashford, Dan Bucatinsky, Freddie Stroma, Milo Ventimiglia, Treat Williams and Larry Miller.
The film is scheduled to be released on November 21, 2018. View the trailer below.
