Hercy Miller commits to Tennessee State

Amidst reports circulating that Master P is in the works of purchasing his own HBCU, his son, Hercy commits to Tennesse State Basketball program.

A 6-foot-3 senior at Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis, Minnesota received offers from Vanderbilt, UCLA, LSU, USC, Missouri, Arizona, and Georgetown and turned them all down to head to the HBCU. During his press conference, he was vocal about being a leader and change agent, “I want to be a leader and dream of mine and goal of mine is to change the narrative. I want to show people you don’t have to go to one of those big schools, Power 5 conference schools, just to be great. There are a lot of great people who came out of HBCUs or mid-major schools. I want to be the next one.” When it came down to it, it was between Vanderbilt and Tennesse State. Master P and Hercy Miller both credited TSU’s head coach Brian Collins tenacity as to why the decision to head down south, “I had never seen a coach with that much confidence. Coach Collins was like ‘we want you to come here and I was like ‘Coach for real? Do you know all the big schools that are offering us? He said ‘Yeah, I looked at that but they’re nothing like Tennesse State. ‘I felt a realness in him and his staff. He wants a winning program and he wants to change how people think about Tennesse State and we’re going to do that.”

Hercy is following in his father’s and older brother, Romeo, footsteps. Master P played with the Charlotte Hornets and Toronto Raptors in the preseason in the 90s and Romeo played two seasons with USC alongside, San Antonio Spur and NBA All-Star, DeMar DeRozan.

Last summer, high school stars came forward in wanting to change the narrative and make HBCUs their priority and not their last choice. In July 2020 Makur Maker made history as the highest-ranked college basketball prospect to commit to an HBCU.

Famous Alumni from TSU include NBA star Robert Covington of the Portland Trailblazers, and none other than Oprah Winfrey. Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant played in the same conference as Tennesse State (Murray State).
