K-Pop Superstar CL Makes Her Acting Debut In Mile 22

South Korean Artist CL

It is no secret that the Hallyu Wave is sweeping over America (let alone the world), at full force with K-Artists such as PSY, BIGBANG, 2NE1, GOT7, BTS, EXO, NCT, BLACKPINK and more charting (and even topping) multiple U.S. Billboard charts at increasingly rapid rates. While no stranger to the US or the Billboard charts, earlier this year K-Rapper CL was reported to make her Hollywood debut as an actress in Peter Berg's film Mile 22 starring Mark Wahlberg.

CL in Mile 22

Mile 22 is an upcoming Action/Thriller film that follows an highly-prized, yet misunderstood, elite CIA task force lead by James Silva (Wahlberg). Aided by his top-secret tactical command team, Silva must retrieve and transport a valuable intelligence asset (Iko Uwais), who holds life-threatening information, through 22 life-threatening miles of dangerous territory to a location where the information must be extracted before the enemy closes in. It was revealed that the Korean songstress will be playing a killer named Queen for the organization Overwatch, however not much else is known about the film or its characters other than the synopsis of the film and brief character descriptions.

2NE1

Lee Chae-rin, better known by her stage name CL, is a South Korean Singer, Songwriter and Rapper under YG Entertainment, one of the most well known entertainment companies in Korea. CL debuted in 2009 as the Leader and Lead Rapper of four-member K-Pop group, 2NE1; together considered one of the most successful and popular girl groups in South Korea. Having sold 66.5 million records and counting, they are one of the best selling girl groups of all time. Billboard magazine even ranked 2NE1 as one of the best K-pop girl groups of the past decade. During the beginning of 2015 the group was forced to take a hiatus due to a drug scandal involving one of the members and the subsequent departure of another. The group later went on to officially disband in November of 2016 with CL deciding to remain; signing as a solo artist for all future ventures instead.

In October 2014, YG Ent. announced its plan to debut CL as a solo artist the following year in the United States under the management of Scooter Braun (known for representing talents such as Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Tori Kelly and more). Lee released her first single "Hello Bitches", as a teaser for her upcoming EP Lifted. The song appeared in the Top 30 of iTunes’ Hip-Hop/Rap chart within three hours of being released, peaking at 21 and a year later she released her debut American single “Lifted”, performing the song live for the first time on The Late Late Show with James Corden. CL has since worked with artists such as Will.i.Am, Lil Yachty, Diplo, and Skrillex. She also recently recorded an original single titled "No Better Feelin'" for the My Little Pony: The Movie soundtrack, released in 2017. Most recently, on February 25 2018, CL performed live at the 2018 Winter Olympics closing ceremony at Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium. Time Magazine once noted CL as the "future of Kpop in America" and we can’t help but share this sentiment. As we wait for a full album, we look forward to watching The Baddest Female take over.

Mile 22 is set to hit theaters August 17, 2018. View the full trailer below
