Kehlani Releases “It Was Good Until It Wasn't” Album
R&B artist, Kehlani, who is also a two-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and dancer, released her sophomore studio album It Was Good Until It Wasnt yesterday, May 8. This is her first album release since the birth of her now one-year-old daughter, Adeya. Although having to push her original release date back (April 25) due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19), Kehlani was able to release her album as well as shoot and edit music videos to some of its songs, in her own home. The single, “Toxic” involves a self-directed and choreographed image, which was shot in the singers bedroom.
The body of work comes a few months after her breakup with rapper, YG, whom many songs are speculated to be related to. Kehlani was signed to Atlantic Records in 2015, after the release of her second mixtape, with the help of Nick Cannon; who paid for studio time for her first mixtape. Her debut album SweetSexySavage was released in 2017 where she battled a mental-health crisis involving a recent breakup with basketball player, Kyrie Irving. She has been quoted as saying her new release "is the album where she finally grew up”.
IWGUIW embodies a youthful heartbreak ballad, while also recognizing feminine empowerment. In addition to her breakup, the singer also lost two close friends this year. Rapper and artist, Lexii Alijai 21, overdosed and passed away on new years day and rapper and Philly artist, Chynna 25, overdosed and passed away this past April. Kehlani continues to heal and carry on their legacies during this time. In the meantime, definitely check out It Was Good Until It Wasn't!
