Race and Gender Gap Pays In The Entertainment Industry
Early 2018, Monique decided that she wanted to take a stand against Netflix. Apparently, the comedian was offered 500,000 while other comedians who happened to be white or male were paid millions. She believes the pay difference has everything to do with gender and race.
When she & her lawyers asked Netflix about the difference in the pay gap, they responded that that was the amount they felt she should get based off what they thought she would bring to the table. Wanda Sykes spoke out as well, agreeing with Monique.
“.@moworldwide, thank you for speaking out. @netflix offered me less than half of your $500k. I was offended but found another home. #EPIX.” She tweeted.
Monique has since decided to sue Netflix.
“I could accept what I felt was pay discrimination or I could stand up for those who came before me and those who will come after me.” “I chose to stand up”. She shared in an instagram post.
Netflix 100% plans to fight the lawsuit. Netflix truly believes that their offer to Monique was fair, despite it only being a fraction of what they offer to other comedians.
The lawsuit argues that Netflix has been majority “white only for years” and that it lacks diversity in its leadership.
