Kanye West Brings Sunday Service to Chicago and Atlanta

For nearly six months now, Kanye West has spread his love for Christianity through pop up performances called “Sunday Service.” The show is created to replicate the same events that any church goer experiences every Sunday, from the music to the testimonies.

Recently, West made two stops in Chicago. The first one occurred on September 8th at the Northerly Island Huntington Bank Pavilion. In the early hours of the night, the public found out about the free event and instantly showed up. The service started at 9 a.m. and resulted in a viral of West parting the human sea. Chance the Rapper even appeared and performed a song. Many described the experience as indescribable.

Only two days later, West surprised the congregation at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in celebration of their 69th anniversary. Aurelia Daniels, the social services and community outreach director at Fellowship, reported that the service saw a drastic increase in attendance.

Normally, there are 353 people in service. This week when Kanye was here, there were 1,203 people. We normally see that number for the whole weekend, and we saw that for one service,” said Davis.

Following his services in Chicago, the crew migrated towards Atlanta. West and the choir held this service at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church on September 15th. Although roughly 600 people arrived, the list of entertainment stars increased. This included T.I. and Tiny, Nelly, Jermaine Dupri, Chris Tucker, and 2 Chainz.

To the surprise of many, West actually spoke at this service and gave his revelations. Before he has been seen in the background most of the time as the choir sing.

He began, “I've seen him work miracles in my life. You know the devil presents so many flashy, shiny objects. I've seen everything that the devil could've showed you via TV, videos, car dealerships, jewelry, houses, and I'll tell you..." He added, singing: "Nothin' beats God...and a sound mind."

Critics are calling the series of “Sunday Service” to be a marketing stunt. The rapper did announce an album titled “Jesus Is King,” that is rumored to be a gospel album. However, Daniels spoke that she believes West has good intentions.

“I was at the actual Sunday Service. There were people smoking weed behind us. Those people who may have never been served before, were there to see Kanye, but he didn’t make it about himself,” she explained. “It’s not like he’s out there singing random songs. All the songs are faithful songs.”

So far, there haven’t been any updates about where the next Sunday Service will be held, but it’s safe to say many are hoping for West to pop up in their city.
