The BMI President’s Award Secured By Brandy
Mo to the E to the Mo to the E to the...I still sing the theme song with fervor! Our prized soul sister is snatching all the accolades this year! Brandy has been named the recipient of the 2019 Broadcast Music Incorporated President’s Award. The 40-year-old singer-songwriter and actress has had a very successful career. Starting as a child actress and moving across all of the entertainment industries platforms she has raised the bar for all the black women in R&B and acting.
We have seen her as black Cinderella, Moesha, Chardonnay from the hit TV Series The Game on BET, but most familiar to me is Brandi from “The Boy Is Mine” featuring Monica. Brandi has had six studio albums, all changing the dynamic of R&B and BMI has seemed to notice!
The BMI has recently had their R&B/Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta where they recognized many amazing trailblazers and upcoming artists! Brandy being at the centerpiece of it all! Being recognized for her powerful impact on the entertainment industry by BMI CEO Mike O’Neil and Vice President Catherine Brewton came after much work and dedication to her craft!
Brandy was born in Mississippi and later raised in Southern California. Being born into a musically inclined family it was almost second nature to take over the music industry. Born the first cousin to Snoop Dogg, her family was no stranger to the music game! She started singing in the church choir with her father and eventually they relocated to Southern California where she attended Hollywood High Performing Arts Center. Soon thereafter her mother tapped into Brandy’s talent and quit her day job to become her manager. Teaspoon Productions caught wind of her talent and immediately cast her as a background vocalist for the boy band “Immature.”
Her debut album was self-titled and dropped in 1994 under Atlantic Records which did amazingly well and throttled her into her career. And here we are 25 years later and she is still moving the music industry with her influence. BMI is the leading industry professionals for merging music and business. They represent all genres and all types of artists. “Celebrating over 78 years of service to songwriters, composers, music publishers and businesses, Broadcast Music, Inc® (BMI®) is a global leader in music rights management, serving as an advocate for the value of music. BMI represents the public performance rights in 14 million musical works created and owned by more than 900,000 songwriters, composers, and music publishers.” Taken from their boiler point
you can tell they are about business. Receiving the highest award granted by BMI was astounding for Brandy. She even expressed great gratitude for BMI at the award ceremony, Brandi has been a beacon of light for the industry for many years now, and from one divah to another we would like to say congratulations Brandy!
