Tyler Perry's Speech at The 2019 BET Awards
The Iconic Mr. Tyler Perry delivered a rousing speech at the 2019 BET Awards. Perry won the 2019 Ultimate Icon Award presented by The BET Awards and his acceptance speech left viewers speechless. He was presented the award by actress Taraji P. Henson. Henson told it all while she was interviewed for the Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series. She explained how Tyler Perry was the first to pay her what her talent was worth, a half of a million dollar. So it was in great honor for her to introduce Perry at the awards. He talked about how his first 10 films was about his mother to ensure her that she was worthy, she was beautiful and that she was special despite her past and what he experienced when he was growing. His powerful words encourage black excellence as he talks about never giving up and to let your past dictate your future. This mogul challenged the youth to keep pushing forward and to never give up on their dreams. What’s meant for you, will come to you as you continue to work hard and keep God first. You’re destined for greatness, never doubt yourself even when you’ve been knocked 10 steps back, dust yourself off and keep it pushing. Perry expressed how he knew God put him in the postion to help his own people cross, when the industry wasn’t putting the blacks in films he did. He said when casting actors and actresses like Taraji P. Henson, Viola Davis, and Idris Elba wasn’t getting the jobs they deserved he was able to hire them. This linked back to my favorite quote from his speech “ I was trying to help somebody cross”. His blessing started out when he was a kid going to school and no one would help an older man cross the street but he did; he helped his mom cross over from her pain and beating from his father. He felt he was obligated to help others, he built Tyler Perry Studios in one of the poorest areas in Atlanta to show the youth that there’s hope in you, you can do whatever you want to do in this game called life.
“I want you to hear this, every dreamer in this room. There are people whose lives are tied into your dream. Own your stuff. Own your business. Own your way! - Tyler Perry
