"Family Matters" Cast Hopes for Revival

After 20 years, the cast of the beloved American sitcom, ‘Family Matters’, reunited for the new issue of Entertainment Weekly recently.

The show aired from 1989-’98 and followed the antics of the Winslow family — led by Chicago police officer Carl Winslow (played by Reginald VelJohnson)

and their nerdy teenage neighbor Steve Urkel (played by Jaleel White).

Since the show’s end, one of the favorite TGIF families have all ventured different directions, career wise. VelJohnson has been a common TV guest authority on hit shows, most recently ‘Ray Donovan’, ‘Girl Meets World’ and ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’, in which he usually plays a judge or to no surprise, a cop. Jo Marie Payton, otherwise known as Harriette Winslow has released her own jazz music, held tenure on a few shows (Moesha, The Proud Family) and is now starring in the new series as Lorraine Mann in ‘Mann and Wife.’

Despite being the main female interest of the show, Kellie Williams left the acting scene for a while following the end of her role as Laura Lee Winslow. With no appearances in the last five years, she had a small role on ‘Moesha’ alongside her former fictional mother (Payton) and a short, recurring spot on ‘What About Joan and Eve’ in 2006. Since then she has focused on her role as a mother in real life, as well as a wife, singer and dancer.

Steven Q. Urkel, the little man next door that the Winslow’s just couldn't seem to keep away grew into quite a star. Jaleel White started the role of Urkel at age 12, rode the show for nearly a decade, then later attended UCLA for two years to study TV and film. He’s worked nonstop in the industry since, and he’s also taken up screenwriting, ‘Dancing with the Stars’, voiceovers, and even fatherhood.

The formal reunion with Entertainment Weekly sparked a lot of memories and new ideas of rebooting ‘Family Matters.’ With the emergence of revivals of other old sitcoms such as ‘Fuller House’, ‘Raven’s Home’, and ‘Girl Meets World’, the cast is eager to bring their shenanigans back to prime television.

“Jaleel and I were talking just a little while ago and he said, ‘You know, we can do this.’ And I said, ‘If they dropped a script at our feet when we walked out of here, we would come back in tomorrow, and the next day we’d have a show shot,” Payton told Entertainment Weekly. “I think the first scene should be Judy coming down those steps and everybody saying, ‘Where you been?'”

As confident as this cast is about jumping right into their roles, the world is ready to see what a ‘Family Matters’ revival could bring to the table. After all, Family really did matter and it still
