The film received an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the site’s critics state,
“Girls Trip is the R-rated comedy that pushed boundaries to truly comedic effect and anchors its laughs in compelling characters brought to life by a brilliantly assembled cast”.
Hall plays “Ryan” the famous author with marital issues, Latifah plays “Sasha” a struggling gossip blogger, Pinkett Smith plays “Lisa” a recent divorcee who gets her groove back and then, there’s the film’s break-out star Tiffany Haddish, playing the no nonsense “Dina”. The film even plays on scene history when the girls enter a bar and Haddish’s character screams, “ok girls, let’s set it off!”, there’s a playful and knowing exchange between Latifah and Pinkett Smith. Lord, why Cleo why!
The two-hour long movie uses the bustling streets of New Orleans during the real Essence Festival to paint the background of the film and create ethnicity. The sexy men, the likeability of the characters, and the hilarious jokes makes Girls Trip a must see.
