Frank Ocean Fights Back Against Father’s Lawsuit

Frank Ocean’s legal battle with his father Calvin Cooksey continues. This past January, Cooksey filed a lawsuit against Ocean, claiming that his son defamed him in a June 2016 Tumblr essay.

“I heard the gunman feigned dead among all the people he killed. I heard the news say he was one of us. I was six years old when I heard my dad call our transgender waitress a faggot as he dragged me out a neighborhood diner saying we wouldn’t be served because she was dirty,” Ocean wrote in the piece.

On July 7th, Ocean’s father filed to sue his son for $14.5 million after the singer penned the piece, alleging Cooksey of being homophobic. During his motion, Cooksey argued Ocean hadn’t filed his response with enough factual information and tried to have his son’s defense thrown out.

While the judge did agree that Ocean lacked factual support and constantly warned that the singer would face sanctions from the court if he continued using the “same arguments in order to confuse his father or hide the truth of the matter,” he decided against granting Cooksey’s motion

The judge in the case has noted that Ocean and his father have both used “unnecessary tactics” during the case and has warned both of them to stop their behavior dealing with such a straightforward case.

Cooksey is no stranger to having hurt feelings. Back in 2014, Frank Ocean's father slapped hip hop mogul Russell Simmons with a $142 million lawsuit for simply calling him a deadbeat dad.

Cooksey says Simmons published lies about him without checking facts and never bothered to use his actual name in the posts about Ocean's father. Translation: at least defame me by using my proper name!

Cooksey is suing for loss of future income he describes himself as a singer, writer and inventor and thinks the $142 million should just about cover it.

Due to him waiting too long to bring the case against Simmons and his website, the claims were dismissed with prejudice (aka he can never refile the lawsuit in the future). The judge ordered the case to be closed once and for all between the two parties.

Not much else has been revealed in the case of Cooksey v. Ocean so I guess we just have to wait and see what will happen next.
