Shonda Rhimes Joins Planned Parenthood
We’re sure you’ve heard of Planned Parenthood before, right? You know, that’s one of the reason why women wear all pink. You’ve also probably heard of the situation that happened at one of their sites in Colorado? Well, if you still don’t know what we’re talking about, Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that helps women with reproductive healthcare.
Some agree, some disagree, but some news that is a shocker (maybe not to everyone) is that producer, Shonda Rhimes has just been added to the National Board.
Rhimes is a serious advocate for Planned Parenthood, speaks on it and even has some
scenes from her infamous shows where she hits home for the sensitive topic. She even went as far to actually showing a procedure in 2015, on Scandal. Her reasoning, “...we were portraying a medical procedure that is legal in the United States of America.” Just before, the president of PP asked her join, the U.S. Senate voted to allow states to withhold federal family planning funds from PP and other abortion providers. So, they both believe now is the best time for this moment.
“What she brings not only to this board, but frankly to the world, is her commitment to lift up the stories of people who don’t always get heard,” stated Cecile Richards, President of PP, “whether it’s in the way she talks about LGBT issues or women’s reproductive health care or the way she centers people of color on television.”
While, most people only look down at PP because it is know for having abortion procedures, it is also widely known for helping young women have a source of contraceptives, cancer screenings, sex education courses, and more. We hope that there can be more good than bad, with awareness for Planned Parenthood, and we’re proud of Shonda Rhimes for yet another great achievement.
