Soul Train Awards 2015 RECAP
R&B/Soul was celebrated at BET’s annual Soul Train Awards aired November 29, 2015 with some big highlights, winners, and fashion. The Mistress of Ceremony was the “Love of My Life” singer Erykah Badu. The top winners of that night were The Weeknd swiped best R&B/soul male artist and album of the year for Beauty Behind the Madness, such as Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” featuring Bruno Mars claimed awards for song of the year and video of the year.
Highlights
Opening the festivities the Mistress of Ceremonies, Erykah Badu, performed one of her songs. At one point during the act, Badu actually through major shade at “rapper” Iggy Azalea by taking a phone call on stage from Iggy Azalea saying she can come to the Soul Train Awards because she is NOT a rapper.
On a brighter note The Soul Train Awards was a success from amazing performances from the show’s very first “Soul Cypher” which included Chrisette Michelle, K-Ci, Lalah Hathaway, and Eddie Levert they rocked the entire Orleans Arena. It was actually Badu idea to have the Soul Cypher which she commented “I felt that it would be cool”.
Also, we cannot forget the most important All- tribute performance of the year for Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds who received the Legend award. The award was presented to him by his longtime best friend/ business partner L.A. Reid, but wait there’s more, as an amazing songwriter and producer, he worked with the greats: Toni Braxton, BoyzIIMen and Whitney Houston. There was also great performances by Tevin Campbell, Bobby Brown, Fantasia and Brandy they showed up and showed out.
Winners
We cannot forget the achievements’ that was receive to other artists such as; Common, Jidenna and Jill Scott. Common and John Legend won the award for Record of the Year, the record was featured in the movie Selma. Jidenna won an award for Best R&B/Soul. Jill Scott was honored with the first ever Lady of Soul Award. Scott released five albums in the past 15 years and put out her latest album Woman this year. She has a total of 13 Grammy nominations and has won 3 overall.
Fashion
The Soul Train Awards was not only a soulful musical awards show, but it was also a fashion show? Each celebrity strut their stuff down the red carpet with their own signature taste. R. Kelly, suited up in a leopard print jacket and what seemed like 3 carat diamond earrings. He had to look the sharpest, as he would perform later in the show. Jill Scott was sporting her sultry look in a vintage attire. Last but not least the Mistress of Ceremony of course had to turn heads with her Afrocentric all black attire and enormously tall hats.
Overall the Soul Train Awards was a success it was filled with opening acts from Erykah Badu, from the very first “Soul Cypher, legendary performances from Babyface, and the extraordinary fashion that hit the runway. What are your thoughts about the Soul Train Awards?
